Dr. Marek T. Michalewicz

Dr Marek T. Michalewicz is the deputy director at Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM), University of Warsaw, Poland. Until September 2016 he was the Chief Executive Officer, A*STAR Computational Resource Centre. Marek holds a PhD degrees in Theoretical Physics from Institute of Advanced Studies, The Australian National University, Australia; and MSc in Theoretical Physics from La Trobe University, Australia. He is a computational scientist, entrepreneur and inventor. He has been involved in computational physics since 1982. Between 1988-90 he was at the University of Minnesota where he carried computational research using Minnesota Supercomputer Centre 's Cray-2, at the time, the most powerful computer in the world. Between 1990-2000 Marek worked at Supercomputing Support Group at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia, reaching the level of a Principal Research Scientist.  He founded Quantum Precision Instruments in 1999 in Australia and subsequently Quantum Precision Instruments Asia Private Limited (Singapore) and Quantum Precision Instruments, Inc. (USA) and remained their CEO and CTO for ten years. Quantum-Pi was one of the very first companies in the world focused exclusively on nanotechnology enabled products: quantum tunneling sensors and metrology devices. He joined A*STAR Computational Resource Centre in early 2009. Between 2009-2015 Marek was involved in planning and creation of the National Supercomputing Centre in Singapore. In 2014 Marek together with few collaborators, initiated InfiniCortex project to create a global InfiniBand fabric connecting supercomputers across continents: currently the project has nodes in Singapore, Australia, Japan, USA and Poland and is expected to include several new partners in Europe and to circumnavigate the globe by the end of this year. Marek’s research expertise and interests are: Nanotechnology, Theoretical and Computational Condensed Matter Physics, Surface Science, Computational Quantum Chemistry, Supercomputing and Parallel Computing and Computational Life Sciences. He organised many scientific conferences and meetings, notably he established annual "Supercomputing Frontiers" series of conferences in 2015. He edited two books on Computational Life Sciences and is the author of over 50 scientific refereed papers, book chapters and proceedings volumes and contributed to more than 80 conferences.
