Abstract:   This session focuses on how high performance computing (HPC) helps in tackling complex computational fluid mechanics (CFD) challenges. During the past two decades, the steady increase in the speed of parallel supercomputers contributed heavily toward developing 3D unsteady CFD modeling approaches. In these approaches, where the flow fluctuations are time and space resolved on a computational mesh, the cost of a simulation is directly linked to the size ratio between the largest and smallest resolved scales. Turbulence and turbulent combustion modeling are two fields, which strongly benefited from this evolution as it enabled the expansion of the problem size and include more physics. The two presentations in the session will detail some recent works, where modern supercomputing architectures have been used to address CFD challenges. The talks will also give some insight into the future of HPC CFD.
