Abstract:   Developers and users of HPC applications can count on free advice from European experts to analyse the performance of their scientific codes. The Performance Optimization and Productivity (POP) Centre of Excellence, funded by the European Commission under H2020, gathers together experts from BSC, JSC, HLRS, RWTH Aachen University, NAG and Ter@tec. The objective of POP is to provide performance measurement and analysis services to the industrial and academic HPC community, help them to better understand the performance behaviour of their codes and suggest improvements to increase their efficiency. Training and user education regarding application tuning is also provided. Further information can be found at http://www.pop-coe.eu/. The aim of this BoF is to inform developers of HPC applications about opportunities to get help in performance optimization by applying for services offered in the POP project. Furthermore, the organizers hope for input from the audience in an open Q&A session to further adjust the services offered in POP to the user's needs. The BoF will be organized in three parts (like the very successful POP BoF at ISC 2015) : 1. A general presentation about the objectives, provided services, and procedures of the POP CoE, (Speaker: Jesus Labarta, BSC) 2. Success stories and reports from performance assessments already performed in the first 18 months of operation by POP personal and selected POP customers (Speakers: Mike Dewar, NAG and several POP customers, not yet identified) 3. Open Q&A session to get feedback (Moderator: Bernd Mohr, JSC)

  • Code developers interested in the assessment of detailed actual behaviour of their code and to learn about suggestions of most productive directions to refactor the code. 
  • HPC code users interested in the assessment of achieved performance in specific production conditions or to learn about possible improvements by modifying their environment setup. 
  • Infrastructure operators interested in the assessment of achieved performance of codes running in production conditions, training of their support staff, or getting feedback for time computer time allocation processes. 
  • Vendors interested in benchmarking, customer support and system dimensioning/design.
