DescriptionThe inherent wide distribution, heterogeneity, and dynamism of today’s computational environments increasingly challenge new and existing HPC practitioners along with the cyberinfrastructure facilitators, trainers and educators who are charged with developing and delivering HPC educational content and training. The traditional classroom approach for HPC pedagogy does not fit all needs required at various levels of education. There are several research studies recommending that in addition to increasing the instructional effectiveness, bridging the gaps in HPC knowledge and skills requires successful educational interventions. This BoF will address the question of “what and how to integrate the HPC instructional practices with the alternative flexible pedagogical and andragogical approaches that stimulate creativity leading to recruiting, motivating and retaining HPC education for diverse individuals and communities?”.

This BOF, an ACM SIGHPC Education Chapter coordinated effort assembles a distinguished panel of speakers involved in HPC training and education efforts (including CESGA, ICM Warsaw, CHPC and Sandia Labs) and intends to bring together stakeholders in HPC education including academia, industry, government and non-profit/non-governmental organizations worldwide. Through short presentations followed by a panel-style discussion, the BoF aims:

a) to highlight challenges and success stories of integrating technology-based transformational experiences, such as contests and research, for increasing the effectiveness of HPC education,

b) to gain a better understanding of factors that lead to successful learning; and identity development in this domain,

c) to gather best practices, document opportunities for improvement and potential solutions, and

d) to establish sustainable long term collaborative efforts focusing on development supporting HPC education.
