DescriptionNow that LSI-developments are no longer following Moore’s law, new generations of CPUs do no longer provide for the necessary application-speedup, which science and engineering require for their ambitious plans. Consequently, and as predicted since quite some time, this will result in a competition of concepts, leading to HPC-targeted architectures beyond standard CPUs. The rise of GPGPUs is proving this fact, but these systems require non-standard coding techniques, they are not easy to use. A vector-architecture is a very natural alternative, or as David Patterson noted in 2007: “Given the current challenges of power and memory, vectors are an idea whose time has once again come”. NEC is the only provider of such an architecture with more than 30 years of experience, and will follow this direction, will retain the virtues of the vector architecture, and will adapt according to lessons learned. The SX-Aurora TSUBASA is the only real vector system in the market.
