DescriptionWe will present the work done to analyse and recommend improvements to the GS2 plasma fusion code performed under the Performance Optimisation and Productivity (POP) Centre of Excellence.
GS2 is a gyrokinetic flux tube initial value and eigenvalue solver written in Fortran and parallelised with MPI.
Barcelona Supercomputing Center performance analysis tools Extrae and Paraver were used to analyse the performance of GS2 and calculate the POP metrics which are discussed.
The work shown is a comparison of two different ways to decompose the data across MPI ranks: the existing default and a decomposition suggested by previous performance analysis. We see that the new method of decomposing the data results in a significantly improved runtime which is mainly due to a reduction in the amount of data transferred due to an improved communication pattern.
