DescriptionThe ExaFSA project, part of the DFG priority program SPPEXA, aims at efficient and scalable simulations of fluid-structure-acoustics (FSA) interaction problems. Parallel solvers and HPC algorithms are needed to solve this multi-scale multi-physics problem.

An important building block is the coupling library preCICE that allows combining already existing highly efficient expert solvers in a partitioned black-box approach. However, FSA is a multi-physics multi-scale problem that leads to an inhomogeneous setup: The solvers may use non-matching meshes and discretization techniques to handle their respective problem in the most efficient way -- both in the spatial and temporal domain (multi-scale). This leads to non-optimal performance of the individual solvers and, thus, of the coupled simulation code.

preCICE provides methods for a correct treatment of non-matching spatial meshes, but it currently lacks advanced techniques for the treatment of the temporal dimension. The implementation of efficient time stepping in the partitioned approach is the goal of the presented research project. Different problems for time stepping in the context of a partitioned approach, such as reduced order and stability of the scheme, are described and a candidate solution following the preCICE black-box approach is presented.
