DescriptionEuroEXA is a €20 million H2020 project that brings together sixteen partners to design, build and demonstrate a groundbreaking architecture for exascale, capable of scaling to 400 PFLOP (peak) in a system power envelope of 30 MW (peak). The project will deploy three testbeds in an operational environment. Testbed 1 (50 nodes, mid 2018) and Testbed 2 (500 nodes, late 2018/early 2019) will enable initial software development and testing at scale. Testbed 3 (2020) will deliver the project’s system architecture, based on cost-efficient modular integration via inter-die links, tape-out of an ARM64 EuroEXA processing unit, and in-package integration of FPGAs for dataflow acceleration. The system will integrate scalable UNIMEM shared memory, hardware memory compression, low-cost switches, and a hybrid geographically-addressed intra-rack interconnect. The EuroEXA testbeds will employ a half-depth 1U chassis hosting 16 daughterboards, each integrating 4 ARM processors and 4 FPGA accelerators. The project will target a PUE of 1.0 through renewables and immersion cooling.

The EuroEXA architecture will be co-designed to meet the needs of fourteen exascale-class applications, across climate and weather, physics and energy, and life sciences and bioinformatics. These applications will be ported to the EuroEXA architecture via a complete optimised programming environment (MPI, GPI, OpenStream, OmpSs, Maxeler toolchain and PSyClone), with distributed storage through BeeGFS.

In summary, EuroEXA builds on a holistic foundation from multiple European HPC projects to deliver over four times the performance and energy efficiency of today’s HPC platforms.
