Reinventing HPC


FRANKFURT, Germany, 07.02.2017 – The ISC High Performance organizers are pleased to announce that this year’s Tuesday keynote will be delivered by Dr. Peter Bauer, who will underline the role high performance computing plays in the very pressing topic of weather and climate prediction, and also reveal the ambitions the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has for exascale computing.

In the keynote to be held on June 20th, Bauer, who is the Deputy Director of the Research Department Center at ECMWF in Reading, UK, will address over 3,000 conference attendees on the existing challenges in this domain. Specifically, he will discuss the computing and data challenges, as well as the current avenues the weather and climate prediction community is taking in preparing for the new computing era. This year’s conference will take place in Frankfurt, Germany from June 18 through June 22, 2017.

During his career, Bauer was awarded post-doctoral and research fellowships by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He worked for the German Aerospace Center, leading a research team on satellite meteorology before joining ECMWF in 2000. He is the author and co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers and a member of several advisory committees for national weather services, the World Meteorological Organization and European space agencies. His current duties also include the management of the Scalability Programme that will prepare ECMWF for exascale computing.

In his keynote abstract, Bauer says: “Meeting the future requirements for forecast reliability and timeliness needs 100-1000 times bigger HPC resources than today – and towards exascale. To meet these requirements, the weather and climate prediction community is undergoing one of its biggest revolutions since its foundation in the early 20th century.” He goes on to explain that the revolution encompasses a fundamental redesign of mathematical algorithms and numerical methods, the ingestion of new programming models, the implementation of dynamic and resilient workflows and the efficient post-processing and handling of big data.

"Weather and climate prediction are HPC applications with significant societal and economic impact, ranging from disaster response and climate change adaptation strategies to agricultural production and energy policy. Forecasts are based on millions of observations made every day around the globe, which are then input to numerical models. The models represent complex processes that take place on scales from hundreds of meters to thousands of kilometers in the atmosphere, the ocean, the land surface, the cryosphere and the biosphere. Forecast production and dissemination to users is always time critical, and output data volumes already reach petabytes per week."
